In general, it is one of the skills that you need to have if you are fluent in a language. Another point is, in most cases, the exam is taken to apply for studies at a university or college. Students are required to read textbooks and papers to get ready for their classes. It is a reason why TOEFL measures your academic reading abilities more.
What reading skills do you need to have to complete TOEFL Reading Section?

📍have an understanding of a general topic and main idea;
📍see main points, significant details,
📍understand vocabulary and pronouns in context;
📍make inferences about what you read and what is meant in a text;
📍see the relationship between ideas;

✅ What are materials included in TOEFL Reading?
Reading passages are taken from university/college-level textbooks. Usually, those excerpts are introductions to a subject at university. The topic can vary. It can be about Biology, History, Business, Physics, or even Astronomy, and more. So you need to know English well!
✅ What is the question format?
TOEFL Reading has 3 main question formats:
📍The multiple-choice format (4 choices and 1 answer);
📍Questions “Insert a sentence” in a passage where it has the best fit (4 choices and 1 answer);
📍Category chart or summary questions or "Reading to learn" questions (4+ choices and 1+ correct answers).
✅ What many points is each question worth?
It is between 1-3 points. In the multiple-choice questions, where only one is correct, you get 1 point. "Reading to learn" questions are worth 2-3 points. During the test, it is going to tell you how many points the question gives in the directions.
