TOEFL Reading: Useful Strategies and Resources

While preparing for TOEFL, you need to make sure you practice and master the required skills. Here you can find some useful tips and resources to do so.

Academic Reading: Make sure you read a lot of academic texts. There are a lot of websites where you can read for free. Scientific America is one of them: https://www.scientificamerican.com/

News: Another good way to practice your reading is to start reading news in English, even from your own country. It helps you to surround yourself with an English environment and learn new events that can be used as examples for other sections of TOEFL like Speaking and Writing.

Learn Academic Vocabulary: TOEFL has a list of the most repeated words that you can encounter during the test. Make sure you study them too. It will bring you an opportunity to answer questions as you easily understand the content.

Skimming & Scanning: Skimming is a technique that helps you to find out the main ideas and topics of a text. Just try to read the first sentences of each paragraph to grasp a general idea. Scanning is another technique that allows you to find the information that you need, like facts, statistics, or terms. To master it, try to read a text and focus on keywords that you need to find within the text to answer it.

Know your directions: half of the success depends on how well you know the direction of questions. It can help you to save time and navigate easier through the test.

Improve Your Reading Speed: Reading fast is essential for this exam as you have limited time. Therefore, try to work on how fast you can read academic passages.

Practice With Timer: while you are preparing for the test, practice with a timer to see how quickly you do your sets.
